Fly Fishing Western North Carolina in the Fall

Chris Maney came on board with Tuck Fly Shop Mid-Spring and his first blog post was about the summer fly fishing season, and he nailed it! It was an awesome summer for fly fishing for smallmouth and trout. Here Chris gives us a few more teasers for what should be a spectacular fall trout season! Enjoy.

Fall time in the mountains is a very popular time of the year for locals and tourists to get outside and experience the beautiful scenery this area has to offer. Thousands of people from all over the country flock to Bryson City and Sylva to photograph and indulge in the colorful “leaf season” that Western North Carolina is so well known for. Experiencing this scenery from the water can be a next level adventure that not many people visiting this area get to enjoy. Great October trout fishing with an array of orange and yellow colors as a backdrop is as picturesque as fly fishing can be.

As a Sylva native for my entire life, nothing gets me more excited then spawning brown trout chasing streamers on cool October and November mornings from a drift boat. Not many things can make my hands shake like brown trout pulling off banks and attacking flies with aggression that is sure to make any man laugh and smile. The phones have been ringing and the thermometer reminds us everyday with an even lower temperature at night that great fishing and fall weather is just around the corner. Once the temperatures begin to peak in the mid to high 60’s there will be no denial that Autumn has come and with it some incredible fishing for all skill levels.

As we near October a lot of our dates at Tuckaseegee Fly Shop are beginning to fill up and we are encouraging people to call ahead and get their names down to ensure that they don’t miss out on great fishing opportunities we are expecting this fall. Tight lines and we hope to see you out there!
