March Fishing Report

March came in like and lion and in typical fashion for the mountains, leaving like a lion! March is a "roller coaster" month in terms of weather and temperatures. You can experience all four seasons in one day! Last week it was 80 degrees on Tuesday and then Thursday we all had a dusting of snow. SO what do the fish like when its doing that? Well, that is a good question! It is constantly changing. What worked yesterday, may not be the best thing today as water temps bounce around with the big swings in air temps.

The Tuckaseegee has seen really nice wading conditions in the mornings where typical Tuck DH flies are getting it done. If you find yourself out there when the fish are rising consistently, try a #12 Parachute Hare's Ear dry fly. This is one of our favorite Springtime flies as it will produce all across the creeks of the smokies as well as select DH waters. The Tuck is experiencing a renaissance of sorts. Helene seems to have pushed a great deal of sediment downstream. Much of this was detrimental to many aquatic insects. Thus we are seeing some of the best hatches I have ever experienced on the Tuck with fish responding.

Other DH sections in the region are experiencing only decent fishing as they are smaller bodies of water and more responsive to the air temp swings. Always best to give us a call or stop by the shop prior to hitting the stream to get the most up to date information.
