Stocking Update and Fishing Report
On Halloween, of all days, NCWILDLIFE gave us a treat rather than a trick! Around 9am I received an email with information that had already been publicly posted on NCWILDLIFE's website that DH Stocking would resume in November and December where possible. Of course many DH Streams are not accessible or safely reached and fished at the moment. So places like Wilsons' Creek or Shelton Laurel, or the North Toe will not be stocked.
Use the graphic below to see the latest info on what will be stocked, and a general idea of when.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park: So, far November air temps have stayed mild. This will help keep Park waters at peak fishing water temps in the lower 50s. No need to rush out to the streams in the morning, though. Let some sun get on there to get the bugs going and fish active. Still orange is the key color to hone in on for dry flies. Orange Stimulators, parachutes, and palmers are fantastic choices.
Jackson County WNC Fly Fishing Trail: Scotts Creek through Sylva continues to shine! Bug life is so good right now, that we have mayflies and stone flies making its way to main street! Anglers are reporting success all throughout the day on just about any nymph they throw, and large dry flies. Cullowhee Creek is also fishing well right now will similar tactics as those mentioned above. The blue lines are staying active with the Mild weeks we have been having.
The Tuckaseegee Delayed Harvest will be stocked one day this week. Once that happens stone flies, egg patterns, squirmy wormies, waltz worms - all come into play. Oh yeah, the MOP FLY!!
Haywood County: Jonathan Creek and the headwaters of the Pigeon River are still excellent choices. Dry dropper techniques with flies mentioned above are the ticket. Anyone Euro-Nymphing will have a great day as well. Stonefly/Pheasant Tail tandem set ups will prove useful. One thing to keep in mind is LIGHT TIPPET. The water is low and clear! 7x will be where you want to start on those flies!
